P0523 Oil pressure sensor: signal or voltage too high
P0523 means: Oil pressure sensor: signal or voltage too high. The computer monitors oil pressure, level or temperature. Don't drive until the car has been checked. The engine could be damaged. The repair usually costs about €40–250 in Estonia. The most common cause: connector loose, damp or corroded.
What it means
The computer monitors oil pressure, level or temperature. If the oil system isn't working properly, the engine can be seriously damaged very quickly. The signal voltage is too high. Usually a wire is shorted to power, the ground is broken or the part itself has failed.
What you may notice
- Oil light on or flashing
- The engine may rattle
- Engine light on
What could be wrong
- 1Connector loose, damp or corroded
- 2Wire shorted to power or ground broken
- 3Faulty oil pressure sensor
- 4Engine computer fault (rare)
Repair difficulty: Moderate
What you can check yourself
First look at the connector and wiring: anything loose, melted or green with corrosion? Stop and check the oil level straight away. If the oil light is on, don't drive on. You can check the simple things yourself, but the repair is best done in a workshop.
How we fix it
- We read the fault data on the diagnostic tool and check whether the fault is constant
- We measure the circuit's supply, ground and signal
- We repair the wire or replace the connector
- If the wiring is fine, we replace the oil pressure sensor
